Polar Whip has been one of my favorite lunch spots since the early ’70s. Sure, some things have changed over the years (no more putt-putt, sadly 😞), but the heart of the place remains the same. For over 80 years, it’s been family-owned by the Neslers, and the food is still as good as ever.

From the classic double cheeseburger to the Aztec and their legendary milkshakes, you really can’t go wrong with anything on the menu.

Today, I had a small computer job in Energy, so of course, I had to stop by Polar Whip. What did I get? I went with their BBQ platter — double fries, no slaw. I love their BBQ because it’s sliced, not pulled, which gives it a distinct texture and flavor that stands out. Their fries are some of the best around, and when you add a side of baked beans to the mix, you’re all set.

If you ever find yourself in Energy, IL, do yourself a favor and stop by “The Whipper.” You can eat inside or let one of their friendly carhops bring your order right out to your car. Either way, you’re in for a classic, satisfying experience.
