My home for the next few days. Campground Review: Crab Orchard Campground – Carterville, IL
Crab Orchard Campground is a hidden gem located in Southern Illinois, conveniently situated between the cities of Marion and Carbondale. Nestled within the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge, the campground offers direct access to the lake—perfect for fishing, boating, or kayaking. There’s even a small beach on-site, ideal for relaxing or swimming during warmer months.
As part of the National Wildlife Refuge system, any applicable federal passes (such as the America the Beautiful Pass) are honored here, making it a great option for budget-conscious travelers.
The campground hosts are friendly and attentive, regularly making rounds to ensure guests are comfortable and well taken care of. The bathhouses are clean, well-maintained, and conveniently located—one is just a short walk from the beach area.
If you’re looking to dine out, Carterville offers several charming local restaurants. My personal favorite is Country Cupboard, known for its hearty, affordable breakfasts.
For outdoor enthusiasts, the campground serves as an excellent base for exploring nearby attractions. You’re just a short drive from Shawnee National Forest, Trail of Tears State Park, and one of my personal favorites—Giant City State Park (which also has its own campground, review coming soon). Each location offers fantastic hiking opportunities and scenic views.
For a more unique experience, consider a visit to Makanda, IL, a small artsy town just outside of Giant City. With its 1960s-inspired vibe and boardwalk full of artisan shops, it’s a delightful place to spend an afternoon.
Wine lovers will appreciate Southern Illinois’ thriving wine scene, with numerous vineyards and wineries participating in the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail—an excellent way to experience the region’s local flavors.
Lastly, no trip to this area would be complete without a seasonal stop at Flamm Orchards for fresh strawberries, peaches, or apples, depending on the time of year. I love the peach Cobbler and apple dumplings. They have all kinds of jams and jellies for you to enjoy.
Whether you’re enjoying the peaceful lakeside views from your campsite or heading out to explore all the region has to offer, a stay at Crab Orchard Campground is sure to be a memorable one.
