Thanks for the Add! This is my first review and it happens to be my favorite campground and close to our house. Campground Review: Shawnee Forest Campground – Vienna, IL

Shawnee Forest Campground is a hidden gem just off I-24 at Exit 16 in Vienna, IL. Don’t let the proximity to the interstate deter you once you’re in the campground, you won’t hear a bit of highway noise. We’ve stayed here several times and have thoroughly enjoyed every visit.

Our favorite site is Site 17, though we previously stayed in Site 60 before upgrading to a larger trailer. All 60 sites offer full hookups with both 30 and 50 AMP service, making it a convenient and comfortable stop.

The campground is located on what used to be a golf course, and many of the old cart paths remain perfect for walking and exploring. There are two scenic lakes on the property, ideal for catch-and-release fishing. On select dates, you’re even allowed to keep your catch. Kayaking is also a popular activity here.

The owners are outstanding friendly, helpful, and always willing to go the extra mile. The campground is clean and well-maintained, with bathhouses that are spotless, air-conditioned, and offer excellent water pressure.

If you’re looking for a good place to eat while staying here, we had a great experience at the Vienna Diner with a large group of campers.

Nature lovers will feel right at home here. Situated in the heart of the Shawnee National Forest, you’re just 10 miles from Dixon Springs State Park and about 30 minutes from the stunning Garden of the Gods. If you’re into cycling, the River to River Trail is nearby, including a must-see bike tunnel.

For a sweet treat, head down the road to The Chocolate Factory for homemade fudge and hand-dipped ice cream. While you’re in the area, don’t miss the Iron Furnace and The Outpost near Garden of the Gods.

Whether you’re stopping for a night or staying for a week, Shawnee Forest Campground is a peaceful, well-appointed destination worth checking out.
