Just about everyone who camps has heard of the Blackstone griddle—and for good reason. I’ve got the 36-inch model at home and absolutely love it, so years ago we picked up a 22-inch version for camping. It’s served us well for several seasons. Sure, it’s a little heavy, and you have to flip the top for storage and keep it well-oiled after each use, but nothing beats cooking on cast iron.
Well, I used to think nothing could beat the good old cast-iron Blackstone—until I checked out the new Blackstone Adventure Series. And let’s be honest, being a guy, you can never have too many grills or griddles. After some convincing (thanks, Dawn), I made a trip to Walmart and came home with the 12×14 Adventure Series griddle with the side burner.
Weighing in at just 25 pounds, it’s light, easy to carry, and even has a solid handle. They also make a slightly larger version without the side burner. After just three camping trips, I was sold. The nonstick surface makes cleanup a breeze—honestly, the money I save on paper towels might pay for the griddle in six months! I can cook eight burgers with no problem, and when it’s breakfast time, there’s plenty of room for omelets, bacon, or whatever else is on the menu.
At first, I wasn’t sure how much I’d use the side burner, but it’s turned out to be surprisingly handy for boiling water or cooking in a skillet. On our current 10-day trip, I actually left the 22-inch griddle at home—and haven’t missed it at all. I was a little worried about losing cooking space, but it’s been a nonissue.
I also love the built-in storage spot for the regulator (we leave ours at home and use the camper’s propane instead). Cleanup takes about 45 seconds, and the hood locks down securely with two sturdy latches.
If you’re in the market for a new grill—or just want something smaller and easier to manage—you can’t go wrong with the Blackstone Adventure Series. It’s compact, efficient, and just plain fun to cook on.
