You know you’re in trouble when you’re sitting in a comfy chair, minding your own business, and your wife casually says, “I was thinking…” Nothing good has ever followed those words. But, being the loving and wise husband I am, I responded cautiously, “About what?”—careful not to make any noises that could later be used as evidence against me.
She says, “Now that we have the new camper almost set up, I think it would be better if we got a different mattress.” Now, when she says “we,” she means me—unless, of course, she’s got a mouse in her pocket. And let me remind you, this is the same mattress we pulled from the old camper, the one she swore up and down was “perfectly good.”
Also, it’s currently hotter than Middle Earth in the Midwest. I swear I saw two Hobbits tossing a ring into our camper. (If you don’t get that reference, go find your nearest nerd—they’ll be happy to explain.)
So off we go to the mattress store to have one made. Got it all picked out, and it’ll be ready in a few days. We get back home, and I head out to the camper. I open the door and—BAM!—it hits me like a dragon’s breath. The thermostat reads 99°, only because that’s as high as it goes.
Now mind you, we just spent what felt like an hour last Sunday making the bed with all the sheets, pillows, covers, and mystery decorative items I don’t understand but definitely complimented. I start peeling all the “stuff” off the bed and wrestle the mattress out. She looks at me with a straight face and says, “See? That wasn’t so bad.” I just nodded and replied, “Nope… and I love you.”
So Saturday, we get to do all this in reverse. Get a camper, they said. It’ll be fun, they said. I’m just over here waiting for the fun to start.
And, of course, this was only the beginning. The mattress saga continued when we actually replaced the RV mattress and discovered there was still more fun waiting for us.
