So what do we do now? Talk about camping and start planning next year’s trips, of course!
Oh—and before I forget—we got treated to a great show of the Northern Lights the other night. Totally unexpected, totally awesome.
Now, speaking of planning trips… that’s become an adventure all by itself. We mostly stick with COE campgrounds—give us water and electric and we’re happy campers (pun intended). If we’re staying more than a week, sure, full hook-ups are nice. Lots of shade and a little space between neighbors are a must. Cell service? Nah, we can go without that for a few days. We don’t have kids, so when we “disappear,” no one really notices… except maybe the UPS man. Pretty sure he’d be the first to report us missing since Dawn gets at least one Amazon package a day.
Now, have you seen some of these campgrounds lately? About once a year, we’ll splurge and go to a “fancy” place—like Camp Rudolph in Santa Claus, IN or somewhere up in the Wisconsin Dells. But these new “Luxury RV Resorts”? Wow. A 5-star hotel has nothing on them! High-speed internet (wouldn’t want to miss Landman, right?), clubhouses with spas and fitness centers… Exercise? No thanks—I get plenty of that walking Odie Dog or chasing down the ice cream truck.
And fine dining? Nope. When I go camping, I want to sit in a camp chair by the fire, eat s’mores, and cook red meat over an open flame—or the Blackstone if I’m feeling fancy.
Some even have private golf courses. I get it—people love golf—but “relaxation” and “golf” are not two words I use in the same sentence. I’ll take goofy golf any day, though that windmill still gets me every time.
Now don’t get me wrong—I enjoy the finer things in life: indoor plumbing, heat, A/C, and electricity. But when I’m camping, I want to get away. Build a fire, smell like smoke, cook my own food, and not stress.
Although… if one of these luxury campgrounds could promise me no mosquitoes, well then—sign me up!
Until that day comes, we’ll stick with our trusty $20-a-night COE campgrounds.
