Gun Creek Campground – Benton, IL
Gun Creek is a Corps of Engineers campground on beautiful Rend Lake in southern Illinois, just off I-57 at Exit 77.
The Good:
Every site offers excellent shade, and the bathhouses are spotless with strong water pressure. The entire campground is tidy and well maintained. Golfers will love that a course sits right next door. If you’d rather let someone else do the cooking, there are several nearby dining options. Burton’s Café, about four miles away, is a must—save room for a slice of their homemade pie. For a sweet treat, head about ten miles to Sesser for fantastic ice cream (check seasonal hours; they close for winter). There’s even a winery just a few miles away.
The Not-So-Good:
Leveling can be tricky. Many sites slope downhill and off to one side, so bring plenty of leveling blocks.
Overall:
Because of the uneven sites I’d give Gun Creek a solid 8/10. Without that issue, it would easily be a 10/10 for its shade, cleanliness, and convenient location.
